Characters
-Tanwen Alyssa Clements, Alyssa to her friends, is your typical teenage girl starting her junior year at Pewter Falls High School. She enters alongside her friends Lizzie, Elle, Gina, Sonya, Ariana and Addison, though Lizzie isn't part of the same circle of friends, she's still one of Alyssa's best friends. Then Lizzie starts going out with Chris Herrera and Alyssa is dubbed as Chris's new BFF and everything is messed up. She learns that some of her childhood friends are in with the wrong people and that Shawn Bailey, the boy she loathes with a burning passion, has no idea who she is.
- Amavar, a secret island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where the evolutionary process has sped up, but their weapon technology is far behind. Amavar is a land where girls carry swords while wearing a black tank top and jeans and fly off the top of a building. There are no guns, canons or even gun powder, but their medical research is far more advance as they have found cures for thousands of disease thought to be incurable such as Alzheimer's and HIV. They have planes capable of traveling faster than a 747 and have sent regular civilians into space. The Amavarians, however, are not known to the rest of the Earth's inhabitants. The most sacred part of the Amavarian Law is simple, never reveal anything about Amavar.
Sixteen year-old Zalia Tymek can control and manipulate water and fire, she's the best archer at Nuurdi High School, change into any animal at will and is highly skilled with a rapier. On top of that, she's an orphan, or, that's what her aunt has told her, and has always wanted to see what the world outside Amavar was like. Her aunt, Rhyla, suggests that she go to a country called the United States and see for herself. And so Rhyla enrolls Zalia in Golden River High School where she must learn to fit in with the other students without revealing any secrets about Amavar.
But there's trouble at home. King Haviel, the Amavarian king, is found dead alongside his wife Yirami and Amavarian law dictates that only the son or daughter of the King may take up the throne. But Haviel and Yirami never had any children... did they? The spotlight turns to Rhyla who is revealed to be Haviel's half-sister and Zalia, Rhyla's niece, and the daughter of Haviel and Yirami. Zalia is called upon to take up the throne, but she has found comfort in her new friends, the regular humans. Her friends, of course, know nothing of Amavar and Zalia's abilities. Not until Walron, King Haviel's best friend, tries to take the throne and kill Zalia. Suddenly, Amavarian warriors sent by Walron are swarming the tiny town of Golden Forest and show little regard for keeping the Amavarians's secret. How long will it be before their secret is thrust out into the open? Can Zalia leave behind the friends she has grown to trust and the boy she has grown to love?
