Prologue Everyone had something to do. News had hit about the terrible hurricane that was to come, and Katrina was the name it was given. Preparations had to be made for survival. The highway was packed with cars, scared faces, and the towns along the coast were abandoned. Life swarmed in one location though.
A few boats floated, attached to the shore. Some held cats, other held dogs. Each of these animals waited patiently for the arrival of their masters. Their senses were going wild, but they had no idea what was to come. A storm of some sorts, but when was it coming? How were they going to get through this? Those foolish humans—all of the animals were going to die, and they knew it. Water would swarm the sides of the boat and all would drown. All they had to do was pray to their animal ancestors. Perhaps some good would come out of this dire situation.
Ocean as far as the eye could see. That’s all anyone in the boats could see. Drifting ominously, the boat of cats and dogs howled and yowled. Home was gone, and it wasn’t coming back. No one in either of the boats knew what had happened. Some remembered wind. Others could recall rain. One or two claimed watching the destroyed shore slowly drift away. The young kittens and puppies huddled close to their families while the older pets soothed few souls by telling tales, truth and myth.
Occasionally, nerves would run wild and the two boats would quarrel. It was to be expected when cats and dogs were placed next to one another. Eventually, someone would see that there was no use in fighting and serene peace would return. This went on for days, too many days.
