Chapter One:
An auburn leaf whipped onto the cold ground, announcing the arrival of Leaf-fall. The wind blew ever so slightly, making the long grass and heather shimmer like a rippling pelt across the open moor. The ferns quivered as a pale tabby she-cat trudged through the open hills, her belly swinging low across the ground. The she-cats sides heaved with effort as trotted on. Her destination was near. Her gaze drifted to the shallow dip in the land where her destination harbored, covered thickly by trees and underbrush. She was so close. Suddenly, a ripple tore through the tabby's pale pelt. She let out a yowl of pain, treading slowly on with great effort. She panted hard, her pink tongue lolling in and out of her mouth. Another tremor ripped itself through the tabby's small frame, her amber eyes glazed over with pain and fear. The cat tumbled to the ground, her claws scraping the earth as more tremors followed the last. Her face contorted with pain as she pushed. A small form made its way into the world. Another tremor, bigger than the last, picked its way through the gasping tabby's fur. A second being came. The she-cat waited for more, but there was nothing.
The she-cat slowly lifted her head to the scrabbling behind her. She caressed the small bundles with loving licks, the tiny kits squeaking and squealing as she rasped her tongue over their bodies. The she-cat nudged her kits closer to her belly, where they began to suckle. She purred at the sight of the little ones. One was a smoky black she-kit and the other had the same tabby pelt as his mother. Clouds rolled overhead, thunder clapping loudly as rain came down in sheets. The she-cat looked wildly around for shelter. The bracken up ahead quivered as a small, pale gray cat emerged. The tabby's fur bristled and she hissed at the cat, swiping an unsheathed claw at its face. She huddled over the tiny kits, growling at the pale gray figure.
"Leafpool?" the cat questioned.
Leafpool let her hackles lie flat. "Oh, its you Ashfoot." Leafpool turned her face away from the Windclan deputy, guilt surpassing her gaunt features. Leafpool gave a slight dip of her head to Ashfoot. Leafpool's kits mewled hungrily, and Ashfoot's eyes widened.
"Kits! What are YOU doing with...?" Sudden understanding came over Ashfoot. Leafpool felt the guilt turn to embarrassment. "Come with me.' Ashfoot instructed. "You look starved and tired. Windclan welcomes you." Leafpool sighed, glad that Ashfoot had dropped the subject. Leafpool picked up one kit as Ashfoot picked up the other, and wearily followed Ashfoot towards the clearing that she had painstakingly tried to reach only a few moments ago. The wide dip into the earth straightened out before the two cats as they neared the Windclan camp. Brush and trees guarded the camp from any dangers. Leafpool spotted Barkface, the Windclan medicine cat, speaking to Onestar, the clan leader. Ashfoot carefully set down the kit she was holding and bounded up to Barkface and Onestar. Ashfoot gestured meaningfully towards Leafpool, whispering something into Onestar's ear.
Cats had started coming out of their dens and surrounded Leafpool with burning curiosity. A dark gray tom Leafpool recognized as Webfoot, stuck his nose at one of the kits. Leafpool lashed out at him, claws extended. A small white she-cat bustled towards the now bleeding tom.
"Mousebrain!" she hissed. "Never touch a queens newborns!" Then, a familiar scent washed over Leafpool. She turned to find Crowfeather; staring slack jawed at her with his bright blue eyes. He purred noisily and was about to nuzzle Leafpool, then thought better of it. He briefly touched noses with her.
"I am so glad to see you!" he whispered. One of the kits squeaked as it fell over its own paws. Crowfeather's eyes widened. "Are they," he stammered, "yours?" Leafpool nodded slowly. Crowfeather's eyes widened even more. "Are they," he stared hard at Leafpool, "mine." his last word was no more than a whisper. Leafpool wasn't even sure she had heard it. Before she could reply, Onestar padded up to them. Crowfeather shut his gaping jaws and nodded to his leader. He got to his paws and started to pad away.
"Crowfeather." Onestar said. "Why don't you come and sit down. There is much needing to be talked about." Onestar motioned beside him. Crowfeather nodded again and sat down, averting his gaze from Onestar. "What brings you here Leafpool?" Onestar spotted the kits. The wise leader’s eyes widened. "You have much explaining to do." Leafpool shuffled. She noted that almost the whole clan was listening in.
"Um, can we go somewhere where I can talk to Crowfeather. Alone?" she noted Onestar's shocked face. "I will tell you when the time is right, but I haven’t even told Firestar about this. Not to be rude, but I only came here to speak with Crowfeather, nothing more." She said, guilt washing over her once more. Onestar nodded in understanding.
"Come into my den. Ashfoot, could you stand guard so Leafpool and Crowfeather have no eavesdroppers?" Ashfoot nodded, sitting at the mouth of a large cave. Leafpool wandered inside. Onestar motioned to a small moss bed. Leafpool ushered her kits into the warm nest, curling around them. Onestar also motioned to another nest for Crowfeather. "I will wait outside." Onestar said, and left them. Once he was gone, Crowfeather turned to Leafpool, who was staring right back.
"Crowfeather," She said steadily, "meet Featherkit," She motioned to the gray she-kit, "and Windkit." she said finally, motioning to the pale tabby tom.
Crowfeather's voice was thick with emotion. "Featherkit?" He said, his eyes welling with sadness and love. Leafpool nodded. "Leafpool...are they...I mean, did you..." Leafpool waved her tail for him to be silent.
"Don't." she said. "They are yours." A motherly tone touched her voice. "I think we may have a problem on our paws." She said, converting to a serious tone now. Crowfeather's face transformed into one of great curiosity and fear.
"Like what?" he said cautiously.
"What do you mean, asking what? I am a Medicine cat! I am not supposed to have kits!" she sighed and leaned into Crowfeather's soft fur.
"It isn't a crime you know." He muttered. Leafpool looked up at his blue gaze.
"Not by warrior standards." She said bitterly. Crowfeather nuzzled her under her chin.
"Have you spoken to Firestar?" He asked. Leafpool looked down shamefully.
"No." She admitted. "I wanted you to be the first to know." She said. Crowfeather looked deep into her eyes.
"I'll come with you,” he said after a long stretch of silence.
Leafpool nodded. "Thank you." She said. Featherkit mewled loudly and scraped at Crowfeather's paw.
"Ouch!" He said. He chuckled slightly. "Feisty, huh?" He gazed at the kits with a different gleam to his eyes. The gleam of a father.
Chapter Two:
Squirrleflight woke up, sunlight streaming in from the branches covering the warriors den. She slowly got to her paws and stretched her legs out, feeling refreshed. She padded silently over the sleeping warriors and out of the den into the musty dawn light. The clouds rolled overhead, rain splattering the ground. A raindrop hit Squirrleflight's nose. She shook it off, but more came. She sat down and began to wash her forepaw.
"That's not going to do much good." A voice sounded behind her. Squirrleflight turned to see Ashfur sitting in the shelter of the warrior’s den.
"Oh, Well, better me than the rain." She said. The closeness she had once felt to the pale gray tom had deteriorated after their previous fight. Squirrleflight berated herself for it, but the deed was done and Ashfur, she knew, would probably regret his words as well. Ashfur took a timid step towards Squirrleflight.
"Squirrleflight, I..." Squirrleflight got up and padded swiftly over to Leafpool’s den. She stopped out side it and looked back. Ashfur was padding inside the warriors den, tail drooping behind him, leaving a small trench in the ground. Squirrleflight sighed and peeked her head into her sister's den. "Leafpool?" She said into the air. Nothing. Suddenly, pain enveloped her body, making her writhe on the ground. Pain seared through her abdomen and back legs, tearing her apart. She lost all sense, and passed out.
* * * * * * * * * *
Squirrelflight woke up inside Leafpool's den, dazed. She looked outside. The sun hadn't changed position much, meaning she hadn't been out long. Squirrleflight pondered what had happened. Leafpool! She thought. She must be hurt! Squirrleflight darted towards the Highledge and flew up the turrets of stone and into Firestar's cave. She saw a ginger lump in a small moss bed and prodded his side. "Firestar." She whispered. "Firestar!" she said more urgently.
Firestar's green eyes fluttered open. "Squirrleflight?" he said groggily. "What do you mean, waking me up at the crack of dawn?' He said, his jaws parting in a yawn to reveal a pink tongue. Squirrleflight hastily explained how Leafpool was gone and how she thought she was hurt. "Gone?" Firestar said, pondering. He shook the moss bedding off of his ginger pelt and climbed down the Highledge. He landed softly on the ground. "She doesn’t look gone to me,” he suddenly growled. Squirrleflight followed his angry gaze to find Leafpool and Crowfeather entering Thunderclan camp. Squirrleflight bounded over and stopped suddenly when she saw what Leafpool was carrying. Squirrleflight’s eyes widened as the recent couple of moons flashed through her mind. Leafpool secluding herself and leaving most of the sick cats unattended. Wandering off on her own and returning hours and hours later. Her travel to the Moonpool only a few days before.
"So, this is what you've been hiding!" Squirrleflight said blankly. Leafpool's amber gaze swept over Squirrleflight like a Falcon, just waiting to strike. Squirrleflight knew instantly that she had said the wrong thing. Firestar’s approaching paw steps broke Leafpool’s gaze.
"Leafpool!" He said, astonished. He eyed Crowfeather and the kits, a sort of hostility lingering in his eyes. But as soon as Squirrleflight saw it, it disappeared. "Come with me. Leafpool, you have much explaining to do." Firestar flicked his tail and padded towards his den. Squirrleflight gave Leafpool a sympathetic look and traversed to the mouth of Thunderclan camp. She saw two lonely figures coming towards her. Her hackles raised, she prepared to leap if they were intruders. Their scents wafted towards her and she laid her fur flat. Brambleclaw padded up to her, out of breath and panting. Cloud tail was right beside him, with a generous amount of prey in his jaws. Squirrleflight thingyed her head suspiciously.
Cloudtail dropped the prey. "We were hunting," he explained,
"and we stumbled back on that rundown twoleg nest. We heard voices inside." he looked at Brambleclaw, who was twitching his tail uncomfortably. "I think he can tell you the rest. I have to go put this in the fresh-kill pile." with that, Cloudtail left. Brambleclaw stared hard at Squirrleflight for a moment, and then took a deep breath.
"We walked closer to the nest and I recognized two Riverclan, three Shadowclan and one Windclan scent." he hesitated.
"Well," Squirrleflight prompted, "who were they?" Brambleclaw looked away from her.
"It was Hawkfrost and Webfoot and a couple of Shadowclan cats I didn't recognize. They said they were," he dropped to a low whisper, "Hawkfrost said they had been waiting for me." His amber gaze fell on Squirrleflight, guilt and shame spreading through them like a wildfire.
Squirrleflight bristled at Hawkfrost's very name. "You didn't go along did you?" She snarled.
"No!" Brambleclaw said quickly. "Of course not! I knew that Cloudtail and I couldn't chase all of them out on our own, so I ran." Another bout of shame crossed over Brambleclaw's features. "I think they are still there! I came to get help! Trust me on this Squirrleflight!" Brambleclaw’s pleading gaze searched Squirrleflight's expression.
"How do I know that you won't turn on us once we get there?" she said defiantly. Brambleclaw looked crushed, then he bristled too.
"Why do you insist on fighting? Why can't you just trust me?" Brambleclaw said. Squirrleflight looked at her paws, fuming.
"Because you haven’t deserved it!" she said. Brambleclaw looked stunned.
"Tell me how." was all he said.
"What?" Squirrleflight replied, mystified.
"How do I earn your trust?" Brambleclaw's eyes pleaded with Squirrleflight, hoping there would be a way.
"You can start by trusting me." Squirrleflight said simply. Brambleclaw stared dumbfounded after Squirrleflight as she flicked up her ail and padded away. Squirrleflight didn't even look back. She peered her head into the warrior’s den. "Brackenfur!" She hissed into the tabby's ear. "Wake up!" she prodded his side.
"Wha?" came a muffled reply.
"Get up you lazy fur ball!" Squirrleflight teased. Brackenfur shook the bedding off of his tabby coat as he stood up.
"What is it?" His eyes were thick with fatigue and his voice was groggy.
"Brambleclaw says he spotted Windclan, Riverclan and Shadowclan in Thunderclan territory. I thought it would be good to gather a patrol to chase them out." Squirrleflight sat down and licked her forepaw.
Brackenfur nodded and walked out of the den. "I'll go find Cloudtail and Spiderleg."
Squirrleflight bobbed her head up and down in agreement. "I'll go find Rainwhisker." She said to herself. She went about the camp, searching for the warrior. She found him eating a mouse alone. "Hi, Rainwhisker!" Squirrleflight said brightly. Rainwhisker looked up and gave her a small nod. He went back to picking at his food sullenly. "Um," Squirrleflight ventured, "Brackenfur, Cloudtail and Spiderleg are going to help me chase out some warriors from our territory. I thought it would only be fair if you came too." Squirrleflight halfway understood Rainwhisker's pain of losing a sibling. When Leafpool had left them, Squirrleflight was devastated. "C'mon. It should be fun!" Squirrleflight said as brightly as she could.
Rainwhisker looked at her, thinking over what she has said. "Fine." he finally said. Squirrleflight heaved a great sigh and padded off, Rainwhisker at her heels. Squirrleflight turned to see the half eaten mouse strewn over the floor of the camp.
Chapter Three:
Leafpool followed her feather into his den, setting down Featherkit with care. Firestar settled himself into his bed of moss and motioned for Crowfeather to sit down, too. Windkit mewled loudly as Crowfeather placed him on the cold earth. Firestar stared long and hard at Windkit, then at Leafpool.
"Explain." he said curtly. Leafpool studied his fatigued features.
"Crowfeather and I, we...." Leafpool broke off, unsure of what to say next. This was an awkward moment as it were, but it was even more awkward to explain it. Firestar's gaze was filled with unending sadness. "These are our kits." Leafpool finally said. She turned her gaze to Crowfeather, seeking comfort, but his blue eyes rested on Firestar, a guarded expression blocking any way for her to grasp his attention. Leafpool turned back to Firestar, hoping that he would understand. Before anyone could speak, Sandstorm burst in.
"Leafpool!" She cried happily. "We have been searching all..." she broke off as her eyes strayed to Featherkit and Windkit. Her eyes locked on Crowfeather. Her gazed turned from confusion to a cold, blank stare as she met them with Leafpool. "What is this?" She said calmly
"I was getting to that." Firestar broke in. "Leafpool, have you gone to the Moonpool yet?" He asked, his emerald eyes scorching Leafpool’s pelt. Leafpool flinched. The truth was that she had been avoiding Starclan, afraid that they would exile her as medicine cat and leave her forever. Leafpool shook her head. "Than I suggest you do, but after you have had proper rest and your kits have a warm place to sleep." Firestar said in contempt. He gave Leafpool a long look and padded out of the den. Sandstorm looked at Leafpool, then at the kits.
"I wish you well,” she said blankly. She was enveloped in her own thoughts. When she at last left sanded paw prints out of the den, Leafpool looked at Crowfeather.
"Oh, what have we done?" She cried. Crowfeather rushed to her and comforted her, wrapping his tail around hers, but he was so unsure of what to say.
"Everything will be...fine." he managed. "Lets find you your den,” he said, leading her out of the darkened cave. Leafpool blinked as the harsh light pierced her vision. She finally adapted and clambered down the Highledge, Featherkit swinging from her jaws. Crowfeather followed, and looked around.
"Where is your den?" he said through a mouthful of fur. Leafpool inclined her head and walked into her den. She found her moss bed and set Featherkit gently into the warm nest. She took Windkit from Crowfeather and set him down next to his sister.
"There." she said. Suddenly Leafpool was exhausted. Her trudge to Windclan and the labored birth really took it out of her. She sighed heavily, knowing she could not rest until her other obligations were finished. She flicked her tail to Crowfeather, telling him to stay with the kits, and trotted out of the den. She looked around the bustling camp, searching for a certain ginger warrior. She saw Squirrleflight leaving the camp with Brackenfur, Cloudtail, Spiderleg and Rainwhisker. Brambleclaw followed behind them, his tail drooping. Leafpool darted up to Squirrleflight. "Squirrleflight!" she called. The ginger warrior's head turned. "Where are you going?" Leafpool asked. Before Squirrleflight could reply, Brambleclaw answered.
"We are going to chase out some traitors,” he said through clenched teeth. The band of cats left before Leafpool could close her mouth. She shook off the thought and headed to where Brightheart was sharing a vole with her daughter, Whitepaw.
"Hello Brightheart." Leafpool whispered. Brightheart looked up, her scarred face glowing with happiness.
"Leafpool!" She cried. "You are back!" she got to her feet and touched noses with her. "We were so worried!" She said.
Whitepaw bounced around. "Guess what!" she said, swinging her haunches back and forth.
"What?" Leafpool said, her problems washing away with the apprentices excitement.
"I am going to be a warrior soon!" she said triumphantly. Leafpool looked happily upon the young apprentice.
"That's great!" she meowed. Leafpool couldn't remember receiving such happy news since her return. She playfully cuffed Whitepaw over the ears and looked at Brightheart. "Is Daisy still with the clan? Or did she leave, like she threatened too?" Leafpool asked cautiously, remembering the cream-colored she-cat seething at Cloudtail before she stalked out of the camp. Brightheart lifted her head, unmasked hostility gleaming in her eyes.
"No, she came back." she said flatly, motioning to a cream colored lump at the edge of the nursery. Daisy turned her head towards them and gave an excited nod. She heaved herself to her paws and started to trot over. Brightheart got up and haughtily stalked away, leaving Leafpool and Daisy.
"Your back! I was afraid Brightheart would become medicine cat!" Daisy said, not unkindly. Leafpool's eyes widened. Any cat would take that as an insult in the clan, the way Daisy said it.
"Yea.... I’m, I'm, back." Leafpool said. "Do you need something for that?" Leafpool said, gesturing to a large scar running the length of Daisy's leg.
"Oh, that?" Daisy said uneasily. "No." She hastily wrapped her tail around her leg to cover the wound. Leafpool eyed Daisy suspiciously, and then decided not to think on it. "Do you know where Cloudtail is?" Daisy asked suddenly, her eyes opened wide as if she was being stalked by something.
"I think I saw him over by the entrance, but...."
"Thank you!" Daisy said, cutting her off and darting towards Cloudtail. Leafpool walked back to her den, dumbfounded by what had just occurred.
Chapter Four:
Squirrleflight walked steadily and swiftly, trying to keep up with the warriors with her injured leg. She silently cursed the badger that had bestowed his mark on her haunch. Brambleclaw swooped his head around, looking at Squirrleflight in sympathy.
"Need help?" He asked hesitantly.
"I'm fine!" she snapped. Squirrleflight hastened her pace, determined to keep up with the other warriors. She glanced at Brambleclaw, and then hastily looked away at the sight of his hurt expression. Brambleclaw stiffened beside her.
"We are getting close!" He whispered urgently. Squirrleflight lowered her body, trying to walk as stealthily and silently as she could. She saw a small shed, with a door hanging on its hinges. Squirrleflight flattened her ears at the terrible sound of the squeaky plank of wood. As they neared, the many smells of the clans mingled with that of Thunderclan, making their scent glands confused and stinging. Squirrleflight curled her lip in disgust. Brambleclaw flicked his tail for all to be silent, and then cautiously entered the dingy nest. Voices emanated from inside. Squirrleflight watched as Brambleclaw's tail was engulfed in darkness. She tilted her ears toward the nest, straining them for even the slightest noise.
"Welcome, Brambleclaw. We've been waiting." Squirrleflight’s blood ran chill at the sound of Hawkfrost’s voice. She bristled fro head to tail and prepared to pounce. Cloudtail's tail tip brushed her shoulder and Squirrleflight stopped mid step. She sat down, still fuming at the traitors’ presence.
"Um, hello." Came Brambleclaw's hesitant reply. "What are you all doing here?" Brambleclaw asked casually. If Squirrleflight hadn't known better, she would have thought he had planned on meeting them!
"Like you don't know!" Spat the voice of Russetfur.
Brambleclaw calmly padded towards her. Squirrleflight was shocked when he looked and acted so calm and cool.
"If I were you, I wouldn't be crossing paths with the son's of Tigerstar." he whispered into Russetfur's ear. Russetfur shrank back, hissing a threat. Brambleclaw looked to Hawkfrost, nodding his brown head. "We meet again,” he said, walking up to his half-brother. "How goes prey in Riverclan?" he said. Hawkfrost's eyes turned from delighted to very annoyed.
"No time for pleasantries. We must get to work."
Brambleclaw thingyed his head. "Work?
Hawkfrost laughed. "You really have no idea do you? Why have you skipped our meetings with Tigerstar? Have you gotten no rest?" Hawkfrost's eyes bore into the dark corner in which Squirrleflight and the rest of the cats hid. Brambleclaw spoke,
“I have no need to. I believe in working alone!” Brambleclaw gave a slight motion to the other cats. Hawkfrost’s eyes glinted slyly.
“Well, if we want to overtake the forest, we’ll need some extra paws.” He said. Brambleclaw was at a loss of what to say next, so he flicked his tail. Hawkfrost's eyes darted towards the hiding place as Squirrleflight leapt out and pinned him to the ground.
“Traitor!” she hissed. The other Thunderclan warriors had joined, cornering the other cats. Hawkfrost’s eyes were ablaze.
“No!” he cried. “Traitor!” his eyes were fixed on Brambleclaw.
"No, Hawkfrost, it you who was traitor to me!” Brambleclaw’s amber eyes were full of hurt and sorrow for his half-brother.
“Me?” Hawkfrost said. “Traitor? No, Brambleclaw. It is you. You betrayed our father! Our bloodline! Our freedom!” He flung Squirrelflight off of him, and leapt at Brambleclaw. Brambleclaw waited. Just a few more seconds, he thought. Brambleclaw screeched, his long claws glinting as they met with Hawkfrost's pelt. Hawkfrost screeched in pain, but retaliated with a swipe of his powerful claws onto Brambleclaw’s shoulder. He turned his pale gaze onto his kin, hatred and a sort of remorse gleaming into them.
“Now we must say goodbye, Brambleclaw. I thought you were different, but I was wrong. Father was right, you are weak, and you let softness and,” he turned towards Squirrelflight, “love get in the way.” With a final hiss, he leaped away out of the shack, followed closely by Russetfur and the rest of his followers. Russetfur turned to Squirrelflight for one last sentence, “You’re next, kittypet!” she cackled as she pelted after Hawkfrost, leaving the Thunderclan cats alone in the darkness. Squirrelflight was filled with rage.
“A kittypet? No one has EVER called me a kittypet! I’ll show her. I’ll….”
Cloudtail swiped his tail over her mouth, “Be quiet.” The white warrior whispered, motioning to Brambleclaw. The broad tabby was shifting gently to his paws, his amber gaze drifting over Squirrelflight with growing hurt and embarrassment. Squirrelflight knew why, and Hawkfrost’s words chilled her. Love? Of course not. Not unless Brambleclaw had spilled his darkest secrets to Hawkfrost. There was no way Hawkfrost could’ve found out otherwise. A new fury built itself inside Squirrelflight, a raging monster with flaming fangs.
“You tell Hawkfrost everything, don’t you?” She found herself whispering gently into Brambleclaw’s ear. Brambleclaw looked at her with guilt, a small nod moving the whiskers on his head. He got up, and trotted out of the shabby hut and into the daylight. He stretched, scraping his claws over the crusted earth. Cloudtail and Rainwhisker followed, not at all dazed by the current conversations and tension. As Squirrelflight trotted into the daylight, she stared at Brambleclaw. His amber gaze found its way to hers, locking instantly. Brambleclaw waved his tail for Cloudtail and Rainwhisker to leave. Squirrelflight sat, curling her tail neatly around her flame colored paws. Her green eyes delved into Brambleclaw, mixed emotions making her mind go wild. Brambleclaw gulped, and said,
“I know you still don’t trust me, Squirrelflight, but I can’t deny it anymore. I….” he stopped, making sure that all of the cats were out of earshot besides Squirrelflight. “I love you.” Was all he whispered. Squirrelflight was suddenly filled with a great joy, and it welled up inside of her, making her purr.
“Oh Brambleclaw." She mewed gently, a teasing glint in her bright eyes. "How long did it take for you to figure that out, you silly furball!” she teased. Brambleclaw was caught off guard, but soon eased into a steady, droning purr. His heart almost burst as Squirrelflight nuzzled him.
“I didn’t know for so long,” she said, ”but now I do. I was so confused, but now it’s all clear. I love you. I truly love you Brambleclaw.” They walked back to camp together, their tails twining like ivy leaves around an old haunt.
As they padded back, Squirrelflight's mirth was soon downcast by a huge, looming shadow of doubt. Hawkfrost. He was still out there, plotting and planning to take over the forest with Shadowclan at his aide. What would Thunderclan do?
